North Carolina CDL preparation essentials
North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles is the official source for current North Carolina commercial driver licensing procedures. Requirements may include identity and residency evidence, lawful-status documentation, an existing driver license, medical self-certification, applicable fees and state-specific forms.
General Knowledge is the foundation. Vehicle configuration and planned work determine whether Air Brakes, Combination, Passenger, School Bus, Tanker, HazMat or Doubles/Triples testing also applies.
Select the correct interstate or intrastate self-certification category. Drivers in non-excepted operation generally must meet applicable medical qualification requirements.
Federal ELDT rules apply to many first-time Class A or B applicants, Class B-to-A upgrades and first-time Passenger, School Bus or HazMat endorsements, subject to exemptions.
The CDL skills test includes vehicle inspection, basic control skills and an on-road test. The vehicle must represent the class and endorsements you seek.
