How to choose a CDL school

A good school should explain exactly what is included, how much driving time you receive, which vehicle you train on and what happens if you need additional practice.

ELDT status

Search the FMCSA Training Provider Registry and confirm the exact location providing your training.

Real driving time

Ask how many behind-the-wheel hours are scheduled for you—not simply the total program length.

Vehicle and transmission

Confirm Class A or B equipment, manual or automatic transmission, and the student-to-truck ratio.

04

Price and funding

Request tuition, testing, permit, physical, drug-screen and retest costs in writing.

05

Schedule and support

Compare weekday, evening or weekend options plus job-search and employer connections.

06

Visit before paying

Inspect the classroom, yard and vehicles and speak with current students when possible.

CDL school questions

Do I have to attend an FMCSA-listed school?

If ELDT applies to your license or endorsement, theory and behind-the-wheel training must come from providers listed in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry.

How long is CDL school?

Program length varies by license class, schedule and school. Ask for classroom, range and public-road hours separately.

Does a school guarantee a CDL or a job?

No legitimate school can guarantee that you will pass a state test or receive a specific job. Treat outcome claims carefully and request written details.

Can workforce funding pay for training?

Some eligible students may receive WIOA, CareerLink, veteran or employer funding. Availability and school eligibility vary by location.
