The numbers

BTS reports seasonally adjusted truck transportation employment of about 1.465 million in July 2026, virtually unchanged from June and 1.2% below July 2025. Transportation-sector unemployment was 5.1% on a not-seasonally-adjusted basis.

What the data cannot tell you

National employment totals do not describe hiring in a particular city, fleet segment or endorsement category. Local demand can differ sharply between long-haul, regional, construction, passenger and specialized work.

Applicant takeaway

Compare current local openings before choosing training. Check home-time, transmission, endorsements, experience requirements and whether the advertised pay is hourly, mileage-based or activity-based.
