The dispute
FreightWaves reports that a coalition of state attorneys general filed legal challenges seeking to block federal access to a commercial-driver database containing licensing and personally identifiable information. The claims concern legal authority, privacy protections and the relationship between state licensing agencies and federal departments.
What CDLIS does
The Commercial Driver’s License Information System supports state-to-state checks intended to prevent a driver from holding more than one commercial license and to help licensing agencies review qualification and driving-history information. The litigation concerns access to the database; it does not by itself cancel a driver’s CDL.
Driver takeaway
Do not respond to unsolicited requests for Social Security numbers, license images or account credentials. Use the official state licensing agency for record questions, keep contact information current and distinguish a filed lawsuit from a final court ruling.
