The waiver pathway
FMCSA says every state offers the Military Skills Test Waiver. Applicants generally must be currently licensed and must currently hold, or have held within the previous 12 months, a military position requiring operation of a vehicle comparable to a commercial motor vehicle. The state licensing agency makes the final eligibility decision.
What remains required
A skills-test waiver is not an automatic CDL. Knowledge tests, medical qualification, identity documents, state applications and endorsement requirements may still apply. The separate Even Exchange Program has different criteria for designated military occupational specialties.
Before enrolling
Collect military driving records and separation documents, ask the state DMV for its current waiver form, and verify the exact school and program through official VA education tools before paying tuition.
