What FAF is
The Freight Analysis Framework estimates freight flows among states and metropolitan areas for multiple transportation modes and commodity groups. BTS builds it from the Commodity Flow Survey, trade records and other federal data.
Useful, with limits
FAF can help explain major freight corridors and long-term infrastructure needs. It is not a live load board and does not show today’s spot rate, appointment risk or available capacity.
Career and fleet use
Students can use freight-flow patterns to understand regional industries. Fleets can combine the data with customer history and operating costs when evaluating terminals, equipment and lanes.
