The warning
FMCSA says motor carriers have received fake documents from entities claiming to be government officials. The agency states that the documents were not generated by FMCSA. Carrier identity theft can also involve unauthorized use of a USDOT number or registration information.
Verify before responding
Do not send money, passwords, an EIN, banking information or document copies merely because an email contains a government logo. Navigate independently to an official .gov page, verify contact details and check the carrier’s own FMCSA account.
Protect the business
Limit access to company email and registration accounts, enable multi-factor authentication, preserve evidence of suspicious messages, and follow FMCSA’s official fraud and identity-theft steps when information has been misused.
